Attendance and Participation Policy

Purpose
Regular attendance and active participation are essential for student success at Sunrise Pine. Because our classes are highly personalized and often one-on-one, showing up on time ensures you get the most out of your education. This policy explains our expectations for live classes, independent work, and how we handle absences.

What counts as attendance

A student is considered present when they:

  • Join scheduled live Zoom sessions on time with their camera and microphone ready, and actively participate.
  • Work in the learning platform on assigned lessons and assessments.
  • Complete a minimum of 2 hours of independent work daily.

How we record attendance

  • Teachers track attendance directly during all live 1:1 and group sessions.
  • Our learning platform automatically logs activity, including logins, time spent on lessons, and assessment completion. These analytics simply help our teachers and parents monitor progress and ensure students are staying on track.

Reporting absences

  • Parent notice: If a student needs to miss a class, a parent or guardian must email the teacher at least 24 hours in advance. We completely understand that emergencies happen, but early notice is crucial since our teachers plan highly individualized lessons for each student.
  • Teacher check-in: If a student misses a class without any prior notice, the teacher will reach out to the parents to check in and make sure everything is okay.

Tardiness and participation

  • On-time expectation: Students are expected to arrive on time for live sessions and stay engaged for the entire class.
  • 15-minute grace period: We offer a grace period of up to 15 minutes for late arrivals. If a student is more than 15 minutes late, the teacher may end the session, and it will be recorded as a missed class.
  • During class: Students must stay focused on the lesson. Playing games or browsing unrelated websites during a live session is not allowed.
  • Follow-up: If tardiness becomes a regular issue, we will schedule a supportive call with the parents to create a plan that helps the student succeed.

Engagement and pacing expectations

  • Students are responsible for keeping up with their daily tasks and pacing tracker.
  • Teachers regularly monitor how students engage with the material. If we notice unusually short quiz times or rushed work, we will review this with the student and parent. This is not to punish the student, but to see if extra academic support or guidance is needed.

Make-up work, retakes, and rescheduling

  • Missed work: Students can make up missed independent work, labs, and quizzes without academic penalty.
  • Rescheduling live classes: If a live class is canceled with at least 24 hours of notice, we will do our best to reschedule it based on teacher availability. Classes missed without notice or canceled late cannot be rescheduled.
  • Assessment retakes: We believe in true academic mastery. If a student performs poorly on an assessment, they may consult their teacher and request up to three retakes on that topic using different question sets.

Extended absences

  • If a student needs to be away for more than 3 consecutive school days, parents must let us know. We will happily create a temporary pacing plan to prevent the workload from piling up.
  • Early communication allows us to pause portions of the curriculum, adjust deadlines, and fully support the student while they are away.

Communication and support

  • Teacher outreach: Teachers will proactively contact parents about absences or pacing concerns so we can solve problems together early on.
  • Student responsibility: We strongly encourage students to advocate for themselves. Please ask for help promptly whenever you face tech issues, content questions, or time management challenges.
